  • Look, I’m tired of Jefferies smug “I tweeted about it, what more do you want” face, but I do want to call out a bit of a hypocrisy I’m seeing here on Lemmy.

Theres a bunch of folks clamoring about how they want Democrats to focus on trying to fix things and not just waste time on impeachment, but then Jefferies says that’s what he’s gonna do and everyone is back to WHAT ABOUT IMPEACHMENT.

Personally I’m a fan of the walk and chew approach of doing both, but seeing a lot of people bickering about what Democrats should do for the next two years as if nothing they do will be sufficient.

For me, for now, I’m just glad we slowed the bleeding.

Not saying it’s a good thing, but wacky people can’t seem to comprehend that it’s possible for more… Let’s call them traditional Democrats could be turned off by Leftists, than there are Leftists turned off by Democrats.

Either way though, Republicans profit from the infighting to the left and people’s inability to compromise.

  • Edit: using a 25W iron whose tip wasn’t heating up properly. Had to use its sides to get the solder to melt, which affected precision.

IDK if it was a new iron or just your first time using it, but you may want to consider cleaning or replacing the tip (which is usually like a $2 part). You can clean it with like a 200+ grit sandpaper pretty easily, and just replace it if that doesn’t work.

I broke out my old soldering iron a year or two ago and thought I had forgotten some magic technique because I was having the same problems as you. Then I realized the tip of my iron was oxidized and caked with gunk. A 20s replacement job and I was soldering like a pro again.

  • The correct answer is until the PSU does that very satisfying fully discarded “click”. But the article brings up some interesting topics:

Raymond Chen published another story from the Windows development trenches…

If you hold a PC’s power button for 12 seconds, it will turn off at the hardware level without notifying the operating system. This is a safety feature so that you can turn of the computer even if the operating system’s “Shut down” command isn’t working.

After eight seconds of the power button being held down, the Windows kernel realizes that the user is trying to do a force-power-off of the system, and it quickly takes a kernel dump that can be uploaded to the Windows Error Reporting service the next time you turn the system on. (-Raymond Chen)

    …

It seems that the length of time you need to hold down the power button to force a power-off is dependent on the motherboard in question, handled by a microcontroller or some other IC. Virtually every source I can find says this timing is set to about 4-5 seconds, which is quite a bit shorter than the number of seconds given by Chen. Perhaps motherboard manufacturers consider the 12 seconds to be too long, and just do their own thing, regardless what the ATX specification suggests?

What further complicates matters is that Chen details how the kernel dumps created after pressing the power button for 8 seconds do, in fact, get sent to Microsoft once the computer turns on again. In fact, he is one of the people who gets to see these dumps and respond to them, so obviously they are indeed rolling in. Does this mean there’s a huge number of computers out there that require you to hold down the power button for 12 seconds to force a shutdown that nobody’s ever seen?

  • FYI, not all bird glass has visible fritting. They also come with UV reflective coatings that are almost transparent to the human eye (unless you’re really close to the glass), e.g.,

Some UV treatments are stripes, others similar to an elongated version of the fritting from OP, and then there’s the camo-stick-like version above. Stripes are the most noticeable to humans.

ETA: From personal experience, the glass is completely transparent from ~2+ meters away, and you have to be very close or staring directly at glare from the sun to see it when <2m away.

ETA2: Someone else shared the Wikipedia article on bird collisions below, but I wanted to take a second to highlight this graph from the article:

If you think bird safe glass is cool, spaying/neutering your cats and keeping them inside or on a leash is waaay cooler.

(This graph doesn’t include indirect causes of death like climate change, deforestation, and pesticide use, but that doesn’t make responsible pet ownership any less cool)
