  • I mean astroturfing reddit was never new. It’s why /r/HailCorporate existed and tools tried to disenfranchise that sub so much.

It’s just 10 times worse because of the phenomenon you described. It also doesn’t help that reddit and walled garden social media killed traditional forums so you don’t have those to index anymore either. You either have SEO garbage sites trying to bombard you with ads and referral links, links to a walled garden you can’t actually see, or reddit posts.

It’s a cycle that’s bound to repeat, especially with AI. Because that’s how MBAs and snake oil salesmen get money, by ruining communal spaces.

  • You can tell they were having fun with this review

The “film” is part propaganda, sure, and part sop to Big Tech companies who require constant regulatory approval for financial manoeuvrings. Even then, it is bad. It will exist as a striking artefact – like The Birth of a Nation or Triumph of the Will – of a time when Americans willingly subordinated themselves to a political and economic oligopoly. Organising plans for his return to the White House at 2am, after the Starlight Ball, Trump announces he will immediately “begin straightening out the nation”. “We’re all very grateful,” his event producer whimpers sycophantically. It is a visceral moment where audiences, around the world, will begin to taste the boot that the American establishment so blithely licks.

  • TL;DR it’s a way of indicating VP level positions at Amazon. It’s someone really high up the chain. To put in perspective Andy Jassy is an L12.

Longer answer. At Amazon every position has a level. I was a software engineer so that’s what I’ll speak to here but these apply to non engineering positions as well.

    L1-3 are non engineering positions.

    L4 is junior engineer

L5 is mid-senior IC (individual contributor) and the lowest rung for Engineering management.

L6 is Senior IC and middle rung for managers.

L7 is Principal engineer and Senior Manager. For context only about 1-2% of the company ever get this high.

L8 is Senior principal and Director level management.

L9 you skip because that was Bezos’ level and everyone just doesn’t use it.

L10 are VP level management. You occasionally get an IC this high when Amazon wants to poach talent from another company but generally this is reserved for management.
