A lot of the “automation” we can buy is a joke: it should be unobtrusive and provide actual quality of life improvement and it’s not. Turning on a light shouldn’t require us to interact with an app on our phones.
HA with some good hardware choices does that if you don’t mind putting in the work up front. Most of my automations require no interaction to work: they passively check conditions and trigger automatically – if I’m home, leaving, need to wake up for work, etc.
I work every 3rd day, so for an odd schedule it’s nice. I set up Home Assistant to look at my calendar.

Science Memes@mander.xyz•"bird watching" goes both waysEnglish
3·1 month agoMy mom had a rooster that hated me. He wasn’t super mean but would attack after warning me if I didn’t leave quick enough.
I solved the problem by saying repeating “I’m going to pick you up” and catching him anytime he started getting aggressive. I’d wrap him up in a towel, take him inside, and we’d watch “How it’s Made” while I pet his head and talked to him. He calmly but unhappily accepted the situation.
After a few days of that he mostly left me alone. If he started puffing up I’d tell him “I’m going to pick you up”: he’d instantly deflate and run away making unhappy noises.
She’s has a doctorate in philosophy.

Youngest Toba Eruption – 74 thousand years ago. Almost all of humanity died, with an estimated surviving population of 3 to 10 thousand. We hadn’t even invented agriculture at that point.
oatscoop@midwest.socialtoHacker News•US reputation hits 'depths not seen this century' – and 'may never recover'English
3·1 month agoHumanity has survived several mass extinction events. Short of something on the far end of cataclysmic (i.e. “no complex life survives”) humanity will endure. We’re highly adaptable and can eat anything.
That doesn’t mean that most of us will survive, or those that do are going to be having a good time.
President Camacho was a far more effective leader, charismatic, and intelligent than Don.
Clearly you need to spend more time around Joe Rogan watching dude-bros. There’s also several of them on supplemental testosterone: “The doctor will tell you that your level is normal but they’ve been secretly lowering the ‘normal level’ over the past several decades. If you want I can give you my doctor’s information.”
My theory is reincarnation is real and I was a horrible person in my previous life.
Firehouse in the USA: “right leaning straight white guys that watch FOX news” is over represented. We work 24 hour shifts and thus cook two meals a day at the station. Inevitably that means I get to experience whatever dumb-ass dietary advice the manosphere/RFK Jr. is pushing: keto, carnivore, MORE PROTEIN, etc.
They get hilariously defensive when I tell them “I don’t do fad diets”.

In the USA, got diagnosed with ADHD and prescribed meds. Start to finish took 3 weeks. I have good insurance and live in a civilized part of the country – the difference between states (and even parts of states) when it comes to healthcare is stark.
We had to move one of my elderly, infirm aunts to Michigan because the Texas healthcare system is a bad joke if you’re on public aid. She almost certainly would be dead if she stayed.
