Running@lemmy.world•Marathons Are Running Out Of Room. Throwing Money And Adding Days Won't Fix It.English
1·1 month ago@steveroyle@biologists.social I agree 100%! I’d love to run the majors, particularly London, but these days I find myself loving the smaller races, and that’s where I’ve been getting my PBs. However, a fond memory I do have of running bigger races - Valencia, Berlin, and Amsterdam - is that a whole group of us would run it, and celebrate afterwards.

2·2 months agoRegardless of what time you’re going for, I do recommend the Sub-3 World Marathon Index if you’re looking for a fast course.

Running@lemmy.world•More Runners, Fewer Bibs, And A Growing Debate About Whether The Marathon Lottery Is FairEnglish
3·2 months agoSmaller marathons are definitely the way to go, but there can still be an opportunity for PBs. In the past few years, I’ve run Newport marathon in Wales, Pisa marathon, and most recently Düsseldorf, and they were all fast courses perfect for a PB.

Running@lemmy.world•You’re probably misunderstanding Zone 2English
2·6 months agoCorrect, effectively five different levels of training intensity, with one being the lowest and five being the highest. Polar has a good introduction to the zones.

Running@lemmy.world•You’re probably misunderstanding Zone 2English
2·6 months agoBut when runners say, “I trained in Zone 2 for a year and didn’t improve,” the issue is rarely a lack of patience or discipline. It’s usually a misunderstanding of how Zone 2 fits into the larger training picture.
Judging by this quote, I assume the author is referring to people who just train in zone two. Though, if you know there’s a zone 2, it follows that you would know that there’s other zones that you should be training in too.

Running@lemmy.world•Men and Women Are Still Racing Unequal Distances in College Running. It’s Time to Ask Why.English
6·7 months agoI’m intrigued why people are voting this down. If you took the time to read the article, you’d find it has some important points from women challenging the unequal distances:
While competing in nordic skiing and cross country for Middlebury College in the late 90s, Molly Peters noticed the event discrepancies in both sports right away after running equal distances in high school. Witnessing her nordic skiing coach, Patty Ross, advocate for equal distances in the winter sport and being met with resistance inspired Peters to take up the effort herself.
“We’re sending a message to young women that they’re not as capable, and I feel really strongly that this is something that’s so easy to change and something that women deserve. They deserve the opportunity to go out there and do the same distances as the men,” Peters said.

Running@lemmy.world•Over 100,000 pairs of running shoes now removed from landfillEnglish
10·8 months agoAccording to this article, the shoes are sorted, and where possible they are given a second life and redistributed, otherwise they are used to generate electricity.
All trainers and running shoes donated by participants will be sorted by the JogOn team to ensure they are suitable for redistribution before being sent on for reuse in the UK and overseas.
JogOn works with companies, charities and organisations that can make use of second-hand shoes, with 90% of donated shoes suitable for redistribution.
Any running shoes that are not suitable for re-use are disposed of by the JogOn team via a waste-to-energy plant where electricity is generated from incinerating waste.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Music Assistant 2.7 - Taking over the airwavesEnglish
1·8 months agoAre you referring to genre tags? If so, they’re adding that feature in version 2.8.
There is also a Don’t Stop The Music feature, however that relies on functionality from the underlying provider.
The Don’t Stop The Music (DSTM) option can be enabled if a provider is available which supports dynamic tracks (i.e. Apple, Deezer, Spotify, Subsonic, Tidal and YTM). When DSTM is on, radio mode will be automatically enabled when the last track of the queue is reached and if any dynamic tracks can be resolved from one of the providers. The added tracks will be based on the played items in the queue.

Running@lemmy.world•New web app: a fast and simple race pace calculator for runnersEnglish
1·9 months agoHow do you simplify doing arithmetic on a calculator when you’ve got to deal with minutes and seconds? For example, how would you calculate the min/km pace for running 5km in 21:45?

Me too except with the Polar Grit X. Recently I’ve also started exporting the sessions from Polar Flow, and manually uploading them to FitPub, a federated Strava alternative.
