Kevin got caught up when the scene barely existed and paid a pretty high price. He broke a lot of ground in a lot of ways. After his release he was able to flip his questionable past into a lucrative, somewhat glamorous career as a consultant and author. He’s arguably the most famous hacker, or at least the name people recognize.

I remember the Free Kevin banners on webpages back in the day, mans an absolutel legend and this is inline with everything I’ve ever heard about him. It was nothing personal, everyone was playing their role, Kevins kung-fu was very good but he slipped up and got caught.

edit: if anyone is interested, Tsutomu Shimomura, a physicist and security expert who helped capture him wrote a fascinating book and has a website where you can actually watch some of the live packet captures of Kevins exploits. I spent many hours watching these in my youth.
