Made by AI
I will admit, I have considered doing this. I’m not happy with any of the Linux desktop environments.
However, this screenshot perfectly demonstrates why I haven’t bothered:

- If you build your own, you still have to deal with the applications
- Non-native stuff looks incredibly jarring
- If you build your own (especially using AI), good luck building community.
I’m really curious about edge cases too. Is brightness managed well? HiDPI? What about mixed HiDPI with normal res monitors? Refresh rates? Color profiles? Webcam?
I’m also very confused. Is this Swift, or Dart, or a C++ shim exposed to swift?
And nitpick: https://starling.build/guide.html
“Five first-party apps”
- Settings
- Files
- Terminal
- Calculator
- App Store - Settings sidebar huh?? I’m counting 6 here, but also this isn’t an “app”.
Overall, neat project, I’d have liked a human writeup on it though. There’s probably some good lessons that could help others (AI or human) build some cool things, but they’re not mentioned at all.
