I couldn’t believe it when, right as generative AI voice-cloning became available, my bank said they would start using “voice imprint recognition” to authenticate me on the phone, instead of the usual security questions. How out of touch can you be?
The HN comment about how politicians didn’t start wearing gloves over the research misses something: the politicians’ power comes from in-person networking, not proving themselves to a computer. If politicians can’t get a computer to let them do their thing, it’s not their problem. A process designed for a large, large group of people has to be managed by a much much smaller group of people. A process that required a Facilitator Group the same size as the User Group wouldn’t be functional at scale, so the Facilitator Group has to be small, and all these new security technologies are trying to minimize that group to save money. If the failure rate of the system remains small over all, then the system won’t care of it deals out a life wrecking blow to a 0.0001% portion of the User Group occasionally.
At politician scale that flips: the Facilitator Group becomes larger than the User Group. The politician, in fact, wants the User Group to remain at exactly one person. The Facilitator Group serves to maximize the usage of the power of the User Group to such an extent that people will pay to be part of the Facilitator Group (lobbying, unpaid interns).
tl;dr: politicians don’t have to eat their own dog food.
Obiligitory suggestion to fix: expand the US House of Representitives to its original intended size.
