I was just thinking today about non-literate recording of information, specifically that would tend to degrade over the longer span of time, and thus over the longer span of human history would become unavailable to archeologists. Thanks for an excellent additional example, beyond ki’ipu.

I’m always impressed people used to navigate by canoe over the horizon. I wonder how common it was for people to just go missing on the open ocean and never be heard from again.
