My wife’s been quietly concerned because I bought a pistol a few months ago.

Caught the articles recently about how they’re wanting to render US citizens to El Salvador. Sent them to her.

“This is why I own a firearm.”

She didn’t say anything in response, but I think she gets it now.

Did the same along with range time at least once a week, it definitely brings a little bit of peace now that I’m competent with it

Yeah, owning a gun is not enough. If you don’t train with it regularly, as well as understand proper use scenarios, you may as well just hand the thing over to people who are trying to fuck with you, because guaranteed that’s all you will be good for in that moment.

Exactly, it’s a big responsibility to decide to carry and there are many things you need to become competent about and feel comfortable with. I haven’t found a range around me that allows drawing and firing and would like to practice that with live ammo but I practice it a lot with dry firing for the muscle memory. There are way too many people carrying that need to get way more practice in and way less ego and think just having it is an end all solution. They’re usually the ones you see get their gun stolen out of their hands because they’re trying to rack the slide in the moment instead of just carrying hot and ready
