The character concept is really interesting, something you can only do in sci-fi. The closest equivalent I can think of is a newly regenerated Doctor. If we were going to get Ezri, I wish we got more than one season of her, to explore the character a bit more, but, yeah, the behind-the-scenes events that lead to the character being created are awful, and I wish they could have been avoided entirely.
Think Stargate did something similar with… the Tokra? I think. I want to say the captain of the Prometheus was an under cover Goauld for a bit, and the only way to keep him alive after removing the symbiote was to have one of the friendly guauld hop in for a while and help repair the damage done. I don’t know, it’s been a long time.
