My lab has been using the free plan of Slack for years and everyone complains about message history getting hidden. I’ve only ever used Slack and Zulip (and, reluctantly, Discord) so I figured I’d ask around to see what other people are using. For all my complaints, Slack has a lot of things people like:
- A familiar messaging model (channels/DMs)
- Emoji things: reacts, custom emojis
- “Native” apps for desktop/mobile
The biggest negative is the cost, which my lab has not and will not pay. To make this thread more broadly applicable, you need not limit yourself to communication platforms but practices.
