TL;DR: I’d like to volunteer some time each week toward making the world/software/the Internet a little bit better—perhaps a little bit kinder. Longer: During the pandemic, I picked up garbage along the roadside near my house. It was a small thing I could do to make things a tiny bit better. My twins followed their older brother’s example and went off to college this year. The world feels very mean nowadays. I’d like to push back against the meanness, and with my kids gone, I should be able to put about four or five hours a week toward something worthwhile. So I’m looking for ways to support something meaningful. If there’s anything I can do for lobste.rs, I’d be glad to help. I don’t have enough karma or experience, so I’m not sneakily trying to become a mod. Another way I can help? For reasons, I think it would be naive to assume I could just start contributing features to an open source codebase, but documentation, possibly bug fixes, or something else might be reasonable. Something supporting the open web or small web to counteract what ratfactor calls “the broligarchy” would be great. Supporting better software—“finishing your software” in the Eskil Steenberg sense—something to counteract things that make everyone’s life just a little worse in order to make someone rich. Or anything else. I’d appreciate suggestions.
