I’m going through a phase of figuring out what I can get out of the cloud and “own”. Particularly with regard to streaming services. I’ve never paid for Spotify. But I’ve had iTunes Match so that I can take all of the weird, not-on-streaming music that I have (I wrote about this back in 2013!!!!), […]
Not super informative. “To de-cloud I download music or rip it and store it on my phone instead of streaming”. That is exactly what 99% of people don’t really want to go back to after being able to stream. If it works for this guy great, but doing that isn’t exactly difficult and does not come even marginally close to the convenience of music streaming.
The actual solution is something like Jellyfin where you stream your whole organized music library using a browser and public access to your home network, but that takes months to learn and weeks to configure if it’s your first time doing it, and you likely won’t have a DRM-free collection to seed with, so it’s also a significant cost investment if you want to respect the artist.

That also wouldn’t make for an easy article.
I have a TB of music in my Jellyfin server but I still listen steaming services mostly because it’s more convenient.
