Relevant to note the hybrids are sterile. As the text says:
- Iberian queen x Iberian male = new fertile queens, probably new Iberian males too
- Iberian queen x builder* male = sterile workers
As such you can’t simply consider them the same species and call it a day. What’s going on is closer to a messy form of parasitism.
*dunno the common name, I’m calling them ‘builder ants’ from the sci name.
