This has been clear to me the whole time? Hadn’t seen the other narrative.
Companies are definitely shooting themselves in the foot though because junior engineers are part of the pipeline leading to senior engineers so if you eliminate them you bottleneck talent in the future to only a few experienced individuals who can then charge you as much as they want.
But who is interested in long term consequences, if you can gain short term profit now.
True, true, I was being ridiculous
It is absolutely ridiculous. Folks like me with two decades plus of experience in massive scale deployments and scalable architectures can basically take a mini retirement right now. Because we know well that in 2 years we’ll have so many messes to clean up that it will be a seller’s market in the high-skilled engineering and architecture roles.
These companies are all dropping half billion dollar projects run by groups of Juniors who will never learn how to be seniors by the time these fragile platforms start falling apart.
Aye, and it’s not limited to software development either. I’ve always seen generative AI as a way of augmenting knowledge, not replacing it.
I’m pretty sure any senior dev will tell you AI churns out shit code. If not, they shouldn’t be a senior dev.
