A key figure behind Star Trek's classic era has likened the shortened seasons of modern TV to the equivalent of a Tinder relationship, and said he hoped the sci-fi franchise would return to 22-episode seasons.
Some of the best episodes of TNG, DS9, and VOY were “filler episodes.” Called bottle shows, these were episodes with almost no budget which used only the regular sets and very limited guest appearances and effects. The purpose of bottle shows was to save budget for the really big episodes such as the Borg episodes.
Bottle shows had some of the best stories and the best acting in all 3 of those series. They really went all out to make the best episodes they could without relying on fancy sets or expensive visual effects.
