That’s a lot, but also not really at the same time. There’s actually quite a bit of stuff that deorbits every day. These are entire satellites, not pieces. And this is exactly what they’re meant to do, as opposed to staying in space as debris.
Today, there are 36,000 objects larger than 10 cm in space, of which 30,000 are catalogued and 6,000 are not referenced.
In 2023, there were 2,800 new entries into orbit and 2,000 exits.
