Can anyone tell me what it is I’m missing that makes vlc so good? In my experience across several machines, it gives choppy playback with almost every file, especially after unpausing. Like, i get that it plays pretty much every codec out there at high res, but I all I remember of my time using VLC is frustration. Did I just repeatedly set it up wrong and it’s actually a godsend, or is VLC just not that great?

Jean rejected huge amounts of funding to make vlc closed source and commercialized. Like literally life changing money.

Instead he chose to continue to support the FOSS community, with vlc being the only easy way for a lot of people to use certain codecs and formats.

Yeah not every implementation of vlc is perfect. For example I struggle with vlc in opensuse constantly (more of a repo issue tbh). But nonetheless its better than using some shit-party media player on a lot of devices and formats.
