A new study published in Environmental Research Letters finds that continued growth in artificial intelligence (AI) use across the United States could add approximately 900,000 tons of CO₂ annually. This is not a small amount but equates to a relatively minor increase when viewed in the context of nationwide emissions.
So… Basically nothing. That’s something like 0.01% of our total emissions?
The way the news reports about AI data centers you’d think they’re like nuclear bombs that destroy entire cities worth of energy and water everywhere they go up.
The solution is to require them to use renewable energy! Just regulate them, already! The big AI players won’t give two shits about that; they’ll upgrade their designs and move on. Just like with every other environmental regulation that’s come along.
