It’ll be interesting when historians of the far future debate 20th-/early-21st-century America. The Manhattan/Apollo programmes/the development of most of computer technology/the freakin’ iPhone for Christ’s sake vs. premodern levels of religiosity/superstition/magical thinking.
It’s both. Western Medieval was stagnant. Eastern Medieval wasn’t.
