I love to hate on all of the glaring deficiencies of the US just as much as anyone, but it may be unwarranted in this instance.

The US is not the top of the list, but far from the bottom, being 15th out of 58.. That amazes me, considering how bruised and battered the education system is.

The American education system is underfunded, and politicized in every negative way. Then we get posts like this that attempt to bash it further.

The fact that we are in good company in regards to reading levels only speaks to the dedication of most educators. They certainly aren’t in it for the money…

        Two things.

The first: I didn’t watch the video because I specifically dislike video content like this without a written excerpt of some kind.

The reason I dislike it is twofold. It leads to kneejerk comments like the one I made above, and it also forces people who can’t or don’t want to watch the video due to setting etc to avoid engaging with the content.

I couldn’t watch the content in video form at the time I saw this post.

The second thing is that we have been waging a war against the education system in America for several decades at this point and my somewhat sardonic response was one born of both exhaustion at how bad things have gotten, and also a bet that this stat might even remotely be true of America, regardless of what other countries have similar stats.

Take that however you like but we have unfortunately earned a reputation that leads people to believe these types of things about us whether they are true or not.
