I was truly astounded when I first saw an actual real life ad for TikTok. Like, commercial social media is itself an ad platform, how can it be that that is itself advertised IRL?

You need to advertise your service in order for people to use it. If TikTok doesn’t bombard people with ads to come visit them, they can’t report growing user numbers and demand more money from advertisers/investors.

You see this with mainstream media all the time. The network that’s hosting the Super Bowl will run ads day and night for months in advance, reminding people that they’re the channel where you watch the Super Bowl and encouraging you to tune in. News Years is another one. Just wall to wall “Watch TV during New Years!” so they can maximize viewership for this singular mega-event.
