The author makes a reasonable point about using a trusted email gateway for sending emails, rather than trying to run your own, but seems to have got confused about the difference between sending and receiving email. They keep referencing dovecot and postfix, suggesting you shouldn’t run them yourself, but dovecot is an IMAP server, used for storing received email, and postfix works nicely for, again, receiving email.

Hosting your own inbound mail server whilst using a well regarded gateway for sending gives you a lot more control over how and where your mailboxes are stored, and avoids the risk of losing access to them if your provider cuts you off, whilst still delegating the responsibility for maintaining the outbound SMTP server’s reputation.
