What I’m describing is not exclusive to the USA. It’s just how fuel purchases are made when paying at the pump isn’t an option, so you have to go in & do the transaction with a human behind a Point-of-Sale machine. The person at the cash register doesn’t know how many gallons or liters you need. So you have to tell them. But they want to know the corresponding cash amount, not the volume of liquid. So you have to do the math yourself in order to tell them the dollar amount to charge to your card. 🤷🏼♀️ I don’t know how to make this any clearer.

Yes but the cashier wants us to tell her a monetary amount. It has nothing to do with USA using gallons instead of litres. It’s a matter of multiplying money amount times unit of volume of desired fuel.
Well yeah but I still need to tell her a dollar amount. If I underestimate then my tank won’t get topped off. So I have to do the math.
In my wanderings around the USA I’ve only encountered one pump that allowed pump before pay. At some obscure Nevada gas station in a little pass-through town in the middle of nowhere.
The mathematics I have to go through at fuel stations that don’t allow paying at the pump, gotta go inside and talk to the cashier, ugh.
Each tenth of my tank is 2.4 gallons, so if I’m at 4/10 and want to top off, (10-4)=6, so 6 x 2.4 = 14.4 gallons x price of fuel per gallon which is hovering around $6.90 lately (diesel in California), so I tell the cashier person I 'd like to purchase exactly $99.36 but gosh that’s so close to $100 let’s just round it to $100.
My conspiracy theory regarding the enshittification of autocorrect is that they’re trying to make us all look & feel stupider until we finally accept it & incrementally lower our intellectual standards.
Hobbies & natural talents are enjoyable until one’s livelihood begins to depend on it. Then it becomes stressful & a chore.
Subscription car washes are all over Arizona though.
They have fur/feathers covering their shameful skin. They’re just wealthy Disney nepo babies who enjoy shopping for & wearing unnecessary ostentatious decorative items.

“trough”? That’s a new one to add to this thing:
English is a tough language. It can be mastered through thorough thought though, while you sit next to a trough.
Same! I’m Gen-X and promised myself at age 4 when I witnessed my dad was always stumbling into the house drunk & ill & scary, I have no desire to put any poison into my body. Still never have and never will.
Then you write"DIAD" instead of lol

No fair. This technique is for those of us who need to escape torturous misery. You’re just hoarding happiness at this point!

1·6 days agoReminds me of stupid me after I received a ginormous family inheritance I went through a phase of buying every stupid little thing that I would’ve never bought before. It was sometime around the implosion of the John McAfee empire debacle I was vaguely aware that something was going awry with him & the company but I was lost in my own little world buying post-it notes at a Staples store.
At the checkout counter the employee brought my attention to a small display of heavily discounted McAfee antivirus software something-something for only $5 and all my conscious brain knew at the time was
“Wow, didn’t that used to cost $40-$75? and McAfee has been in the news lately. I have no idea what’s going on but yes I will pay $5 for this thing.” 🤦🏼♀️
It was completely useless and I doubt I ever took it out of the package before eventually throwing it away.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why is the US currently obsessed with protein?
3·6 days agoBecause the weight loss comes from muscle first, so Ozempic users MUST eat high protein & lift weights to build/maintain muscle or else their body composition turns into jelly. Ask me how I know 😜

Do you want to like revolting? Or did you omit some punctuation?
Can we, like, revolt already?

They need a more realistic button: “Pay to enjoy it until it disappears with no warning”
