I had a sort-of similar thing that took me ages to figure out, but it turns out my thinking/concentrating face just looks angry. So people would ask me things, I’d be thinking of a response and they’d think they annoyed me. So I’m trying to work on that, but also I just tell people my thinking face looks angry now and that’s helped a lot lol.
I definitely am. If I’m left to my own devices I almost instantly default to going to bed at 5am-ish and getting up at 11-12. But mostly society won’t let me do that, so I feel like I’m on a night shift permanently.
Luckily I’m from the UK, where you can pretty much assume 100% of everything being said is sarcastic and get by just fine.
This is one of those things I’m on the opposite side of lol. I can drive a manual car (I grew up in the UK where most cars are manual) but I can’t explain how to do it. I just sort of know it. And I never look at the revs for changing gear, I just sort of feel it. Which I know is super unhelpful also.
I have a friend who’s a skater and when he doing a kickflip I asked how it worked, as in, how do you make sure the board doesn’t land upside-down or whatever and he was like, “You just launch off and then deal with it.” which was not at all helpful lol. There must be some sort of logic to it!
The dynamic between “AI” boosters and people who don’t want to use LLMs is not on level ground. “AI” boosting in a space with people who want to be “AI Sober” is disruptive and antagonistic, knowing that you’re doing it is baiting or outright trolling.
This is something I’ve wondered about with regards to all of this, especially in the open source community. If a large enough group of people thinks a project would be better with AI and the original project is resistant to it, then presumably by the general nature of open source they should be able to just fork it, make their AI version and see which is more popular. And if AI is so much better and faster, then that should rapidly become the dominant version.
However, I don’t recall that happening with any projects I’ve heard of, and I don’t really hear about much forking going on. I’m sure it’s happened somewhere, but to me it seems like the vast majority of stories I hear are about existing projects suddenly being deluged with AI until they get overwhelmed, and then descending into flame wars when they try to do something about it.
Yeah that’s kind of where I’m at. KDE has been pretty right-on for as long as I can recall, and it looks like at the moment they’re just discussing AI broadly, which I personally don’t think is an unreasonable thing to do, but even that’s enough to get everyone riled up at the moment. Obviously if they actually do something sketchy like adding AI slop into Plasma then I’ll revise my opinion, but it doesn’t look to me like they’ve done anything especially egregious so far.
AT the start of COVID, I bought shares in an airline because I figured that once lockdown was over, everyone would go crazy traveling everywhere and the airline stock would skyrocket (pun intended.)

Reading House of Leaves feels like you’re looking at something you’re not supposed to be seeing.
It’s also a book that I don’t think could be adapted into anything. I’m not sure how you would even make it an eBook.
I have no idea if this is helpful or not (and sorry if it isn’t) but I generally tend to approach things as like:
Can I do anything about it right now?
If YES —> Do the thing ----> Don’t worry about it.
If NO ----> There’s nothing to do ----> Don’t worry about it.
Obviously that’s super simplified and doesn’t apply to everything, but I find it helps to just sift out the small-medium sized annoyances.
So for example with your boat ticket:
If you have proof you paid ----> Send proof -----> Nothing more to do.
Could they reject it anyway? ----> Maybe but you can’t control that -----> Nothing more to do.
And then if they do reject it, you can start the loop again from there, which I guess would either be escalate or just let it go etc.

I heard someone say the other day that most of the time when there’s a ‘bad’ technology it starts off as something good that everyone likes, and gradually becomes bad over time, like social media. But AI is something a bit more rare in that it came out and the majority of people didn’t especially want or like it, but it really feels like it’s being ‘forced’ into existence, so to speak. Which makes me think there’s something else going on.
Homage to Catalonia might be my favourite Orwell book. You can kind of see all the seeds being planted for his later more famous books in his experiences there.
The Big Lebowski is sort of like this too I think. I actually can’t remember if he even gets his rug back lol, but also it doesn’t matter.
