You got PeerTube for that, but anyone who kills their YT account and moves to PT full time will need to secure alt funding somehow either through Nebula, merch sales, getting a W-2 job, or a combination of the three, though, even if they host on a physical server they own and not on a VPS; buying the parts to build a decent PT server is going to be a pretty heavy up-front cost in itself although there wouldn’t be any monthly costs and especially monthly data storage costs like on a VPS.

This is why it sucks that physical print media is on the decline, because one could just scan their own PDFs or if possible epubs instead of dealing with this if physical print media was still commonplace.

Well, if they want to make everyone either buy Rokus or watch YT either in Edge on Windows (the official way to watch Netflix on PC currently) or on another Android device than a Roku with the official YT app, they could just implement a full Widevine L1 lockdown, and sadly, just buying a Roku to watch YT on or watching it on a pre-existing Roku along with the paid streaming services, is probably what most people would actually do if they locked it down like that.

Basically, Google would win the ad blocker and third-party front-end war by locking YT into pre-approved apps or devices, and as an added bonus (for them), they’d snuff out any competing platforms as Widevine L1 would also kill the ability to mirror one’s YT channel to one of the alternative platforms, and I guarantee most people who just post any random thing on YT don’t store their source video files locally to be able to to re-upload on PeerTube, Odysee, or Rumble, if anything, they’re likely just filming and posting straight from their phones.

Now, the people with nice studio setups probably do have a local copy of their source files stored somewhere that they could re-up on their alternative platform of choice, but average Joes filming from a phone outnumber them.

I assume the recent forced JS which recently broke downloaders and alt front-ends is connected to this somehow.

Too bad software still doesn’t exist in Windows on ARM. Linux on ARM, and no, Android doesn’t count as Google’s trying to lock it down and seemingly at minimum castrate AOSP, has software but Qualcomm will probably never support Linux.

Plus unless they discontinue all the modular desktop form factors in favor of mini PCs where everything is soldered, and turn the PC platform into yet another Mac clone controlled by a single entity, you can still just build your own PC and install whatever OS you want at that point since custom builds don’t generally ship with an OS and expect the builder to provide it themselves.

Good luck trying that with loose mainboards for custom builds unless they can just preinstall Windows in ROM at that point or push to get the current desktop form factors axed in favor of mini PCs from the big OEMs.

Good luck blocking alt OSes on PC if Windows goes the route you’re describing though, unless MS pulls some strings to force Pluton platform-wide on PC and stamp out alt OSes altogether.

Also, good luck blocking decentralized and self-hostable platforms, at least easily.

Even music commentary videos that were previously fine started getting dinged and having certain parts muted as a result, even if they’re in Fair Use otherwise because Fair Use is dead and buried on YT and has been for years.

Adam Buckley has been seemingly antagonizing YT by poking fun at this sorta thing too, and you still shouldn’t have to describe someone offing themselves with a code phrase that legitimately sounds like something that Nick would’ve picked as the name for an obstacle in Double Dare, that’s disrespectful as hell to any victims of someone who took that route in the audience.

Wait, sewer slide to describe the offing of one’s self, really?! Google’s that easily offended to where they’ll censor vids talking about someone offing themselves if they just straight-up say the act instead of calling it something that sounds like the name of a Double Dare obstacle?!!

I guess Google doesn’t know that using immature-sounding code words to talk about something like that is more likely to offend potential victims in the audience than just allowing the person talking about this stuff to be straight with the audience and just present the subject matter as-is.

That’s one thing PhantomStrider constantly makes a point of when reviewing XYZ kid’s flick or show; content aimed at kids, and in general, shouldn’t talk down to them like they’re stupid like, say, Dora does.

Language like ‘unalive’ when referring to killing, for example, even in a totally legitimate manner taking on some inherently dark subject matter like with any True Crime stuff, could be construed as talking down, vs. just presenting the content straight-up and being as accurate to the subject matter and as respectful to the audience which might very much include the families of the victims of whatever crimes are being covered, as humanly possible.

Like imagine pulling up a video essay on someone like Jeffrey Dahmer and having it be littered with language like ‘unalive’ and ‘grape’ when dealing with very, very serious subject matter like that, if I happened to be a family member of one of that guy’s victims, I’d feel very talked down to and be insulted as hell, plus it’s just not good optics to use language like ‘unalive’ when the subject matter you’re dealing with is very dark and serious subject matter.

Mirroring is more for your own content, unless you get permission to set up an instance to mirror others’ content to like the numerous mirroring instances already on PT.

Generally though, just like with Odysee, mirroring is for content you made.

I meant as far as being able to self host and retain your user data, at least on PT anyways, you can do that by design and unless Google broke the ability to mirror to alternative platforms, you could mirror your YT stuff over.

Most people are probably just using the official app without a second thought, or even the official web client on Chrome or Edge, or vanilla FF without an ad blocker or any other protections, whatsoever.

This JS thing still isn’t a good sign of things to come should Google crack down even harder.
