Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's something you no longer buy due to intrusive, insidious technology being added into it?
3·2 months agoThe 1970s fastbacks had terrible rear visibility because they don’t have rear windows:
https://smclassiccars.com/uploads/postfotos/1972-dodge-charger-coupe-red-se-4.jpg
The driver is essentially blind in he 3-5 o’clock visibility range when you have to do a left turn, and the intersection is not at an 90 degrees angle, or you try to merge into the highway. All you can do is floor it and merge in behind some car in front of you that you can see.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's something you no longer buy due to intrusive, insidious technology being added into it?
20·2 months agoOld cars sound like fun, until you experience the safety features (seatbelts and crumble zones optional), missing rear visibility with tiny mirrors and the hassle to find matching spare part replicas.
And you think there is not much electronics or fancy extras in them to break, but the older cars where expected to last for 100.000km and maybe 10 years tops before the rust would eat everything up, so a lot of parts where designed cheaper and would fail sooner than today’s cars that are expected to last at least twice as long.

6·2 months agoHa, I had a manager like that. After support relayed a customer ticket to him: “tell the customer he is an idiot! We have a fucking export function for all his data! If he wants a custom bullshit report with is corporate style, he can import it into Excel and do it himself! Tell him that, but in a more professional tone.”
Bestest IT manager ever.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How do you find the best products to buy for everything?
3·2 months agoUses to work at a shop that sold garden tools, and some of the older guys working there had a pretty good idea what fits your needs. However when a test for lawnmowers came out pretty much everyone agreed that the test methods where rubbish, and they did not agree with the results. I think they did not consider maintenance costs, repairability and where wrong about the size of the lawnmower to cut your lawn in the optimal time.
I always wonder how the test methods are on other topics I don’t know anything about.

17·2 months agoI don’t really trust windows updates anymore. Sure it may fix critical security issues, but at the same time they stuff new AI BS in, roll back changes and settings I made (“set edge as default Browser?” and maybe intentionally resets registry settings that I had to make, like disable telemetry and other built in spyware.

A lot of people mentioned the broken webcam as evidence of the scam. I would add that modern AI tools can deepfake a video stream, apparently this already happens in other tech scams where the scammers immitate real people that have a LinkedIn account and existing online presence.
