One reason why I dont really watch sci-fi anymore is because its all just miserable, world ending, world dying, world dead, explosions, aliens, aliens exploding. Boring.
That Hail Mary movie was okay-ish. At least it had people, and that thing, doing helpful and constructive stuff.
Sadly quite often these youtubers and others who speak a lot about a lot of different topics with a sort of surface level understanding are very often quite badly wrong. Especially the ones who say stuff like “X is best because its used in Y application”
That level of simplification is not very healthy for most stuff. Of course, there are some channels that do talk about a lot of topics but do very good research and/or ask for experts to help out with their script.

I was a big fan of HI and Grey, until I started to notice that a lot of the stuff Grey talked about was a bit misleading or straight up wrong. Theres now quite a bit of “CGP Grey debunked” style videos by people who actually know their stuff, based on what those are saying, I have no interest in watching any more Grey content.

Its funny how “little” things like a shopping mall can be so different. In America, they are usually places you drive your vehicle to, spend the day (or something close to that nature, I’ve been lead to understand). Over here, theres one huge shopping mall (I think its like 1 kilometer long and 400m wide or something silly like that), it has a giant car park, its right next to the motorway, its in the middle of nothing, theres no housing close by, the only thing is a Lidl on the other side of the street and some car shops. But other than that, its “in the middle of nowhere”. Its about 10-15 minute drive from the nearest city. Its very easy to get to with a car. The mall has been struggling since day one. Sure, during Christmas shopping its full and whatnot, but outside any sales campaigns or events, its pretty quiet. I know, because I used to stop there for a coffee and bun, when I was driving trucks, and I liked places that were quiet. I even joked about it with the coffee shop owner, she said “well, for the sake of my wallet, I do hope you stop coming here” and I wished the same for her. Sadly I stopped going there for unrelated reasons and the café had to close because of lack of customers.
Anyway… The city that is close to the out-of-the-way shopping mall, has like 4 shopping malls in the center, all thriving. The newest one was built a few years ago and is a great success. All because the center of the city is extremely accessible with public transport and its walkable. You can walk from one mall to the other in like 4-10 minutes. You have all the shops you need within a 20 minute walking radius. And you dont need to drive your car anywhere, you can enjoy the benefits of the city, you can go have a picnic… Malls that you have to drive to are just silly in my opinion lol.
The funny thing is that a huge problem with online shopping people swore Amazon had gotten past, the inability to gauge the quality of the item before buying has come back in full force, people are just so used to garbage materials when buying in Amazon they don’t realize it now
This is the main reason I just cant deal with online shopping. I don’t care if the shop has a excellent return policy or whatever. If I have to walk to the post office to mail the package back, I might as well walk to the shop that sells the thing in the first place, choose one that is not damaged or defective and live happily ever after.
I got a “domestic student/international student” prompt when opened the page, perhaps the other guy thought this was a paywall. I just clicked “international student” and had no problem loading the page.
For me its quite funny to discuss Amazon… I live in a country where Amazon does operate, but its not a main thing at all. I dont think they even have their own delivery vans here, its all done via third parties because it doesnt make sense enough to have their own systems for the 43 people who use it.
Some time ago I was discussing Amazon with an American and said that I have never needed Amazon for anything in my life. Then they asked me “well where do you go when you need dog food, a new drill bit set and bathroom cleaning products” and I just said “to the shopping center 700m away from me?” I dont know if Americans have forgot that malls are a thing, or have malls disappeared from there completely, but based on that guys response, it was like I was talking about going to a different planet. Some people are way too deep into these things… Its pretty concerning, in my opinion.
Yeah thats one of the reasons I enjoy a smaller community with the IRC network and forum I was talking about. Its so much nicer to converse when you know its a person on the other side of the screen. I spend more time and effort on responses when I know the user already, at least on some level. With reddit and mastodon its more like “send whatever, turn off notifications” type of deal.
Though with reddit even thats coming to an end, rumor is they gonna finally axe old.reddit. I’m sort of holding out until then, the formula1 sub is quite valuable for me still, even though even that place is full of morons now. With Mastodon I never got off the ground. I log in like once a month, if that, read a couple of posts and then log off again. Maybe its because I mainly use it with my phone, I dont remember my password and the mobile browser is the only place where its saved hahah

I’ve actually started to enjoy internet more recently. I went back to IRC, found a nice network with a wholesome community which is growing all the time. Recently added a phpbb based forum, which is not very active yet but thats more because its fairly new. Lots of self hosting enthusiasts there, I’ve learned a bunch. Spent the last few weeks setting up Jellyfin and Navidrome for my dad to use, so he doesnt have to deal with repeats on the Telly or pay for stupid subscriptions. I did the navidrome with a old laptop, I put in a headless Debian and use it through SSH on my Fedora. A year ago I barely knew how to do “sudo apt install”, without this community I wouldnt have been able to do any of it. For the first time in 15 years, I’m enjoying my time online. Like properly enjoying.
So its not about internet being ruined, its about finding that spot that you can enjoy. Let people rot their brains in tiktak and facetagram, you find yourself a nice community of like minded people. It takes some effort, but the communities are there. And if they are not, make one yourself.
I’m not a picky eater, I think. I’ll eat insects, weird sausages, odd fruits etc… But there’s just some things that I know I don’t even want to try. Like my mums cabbage casserole. It smells like farts. Why would I want to eat fart smell? Sure, my dad likes and good for him, I’ll let him enjoy the whole thing. I can go a couple of days without eating. Luckily I’m not 15 anymore and don’t have to rely on mum for food.
Anyway, there’s other stuff that I wont eat, not because I think I wont like it, but because I have no interest in trying it. And add to that those people who just will not let go, “come on, try it! You’ll like it!” fuck you, I don’t care, leave me alone lol. The more someone pushes things on me, the more I will not try them.
I like Bernie and hate AI, but I fear this is a bit pointless… Does he even have enough power and/or colleagues to do anything, anything at all? Same thing as with most things he shouts about, healthcare and whatnot. He says the right things but with the current insanity and insane system in the US, hes never going to get anything done.
Of course I am not suggesting that he should stop. I think he should keep going, shouting at the things. But his threats are starting to be a bit hollow. Sadly.
I dont know what my point is, I just despair at everything these days. Plargh.
