I know it’s just a comic, but if I saw an unironic version of that in a museum, I wouldn’t think any of it. It wouldn’t seem out of place.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Americans, what do typically have for breakfast?
3·4 months agoI have 2 scrambled eggs, toast plus elderberry jelly, 2 sausage patties, and either a glass of milk or orange juice.
There are a lot of parts to inflation, but I’ll do my best.
Money is used as a medium of exchange. It’s convenient, easily countable, and an agreed upon unit of value. A dollar is a very, very small slice of the entire worth of the economy. As processes improve and production increases, the economy gets bigger. Because of this, we need more dollars to divide it into smaller pieces. The Federal Bank “prints” money to give us smaller pieces of the economy we can use. That’s why we have “more” money. Your wealth is the same; it’s just represented using more dollars. This is the Money Supply.
When you say inflation, and you’re referring to the pinch you feel in your wallet, generally that’s when the money supply grows faster than the economy is growing. For example, after WW1 Germany began increasing the money supply to repay loans for postwar reparations. But without the economy floundering and the money supply rapidly growing, they experienced intense inflation. The money people had was becoming a smaller slice of the same economy. It was becoming worth less.
Inflation is rather complicated. I had a whole semester about it in college, but generally, this is what it is.
I agree that the average age is higher. You’re the only other confirmed teenager that I have encountered while on Lemmy. I joined Lemmy when I was 17 during the Reddit emmigration.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•You're asked to vote for the food and drink that best fits the region you live in... What would you vote for?
1·8 months agoSweet tea and fried okra would definitely win, but personally, I’d like to see fry bread win.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Since America's namesake Amerigo Vespucci was an immigrant, what should the United States of America be renamed to? (no wrong answers)
14·1 year ago“OKLAHOMA”, but in all caps because it’s big now.
Isn’t this what happened with the banana game on Steam and the banana skin stock market that arose?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What item(s) that you currently own do you expect to be using for the rest of your life given that you don't break or lose it?
5·1 year agoMy Rotring 600 mechanical pencil, my Canon 2000 film camera, and my TI-36x Pro calculator.
- When it come to writing, I have never used a smoother implement, nor one that is constructed of such robust materials. For a long time I used a “nicer” mechanical pencil from Tūl, but does not compare to the Rotring.
- My Canon film camera is old and not a particularly fancy model, but it takes excellent photos and perfectly exemplifies the authentic emotion of film photos. I use it when I go on adventures with my friends, and the photos are always fun and genuine.
- I have tried a dozen different calculator apps, and none of them are as efficient to use as a physical calculator. It does what I need to without the feature cramming that calculator apps suffer from.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's a good alternative to messenger that I can plausibly convince friends to move to?
29·1 year agoWhat has helped me convince my friends is to mention the features and not mention the privacy. Most people care about features and convenience but don’t care at all about privacy. When I’m trying to convince my friends to switch to Signal, I usually say something along the lines of “it’s like iMessage for Android” and give a small demonstration of the features.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's your strategy for waking up early without feeling like garbage?
9·1 year agoI do several things in conjunction.
-
I plan when I need to go sleep using either sleepyti.me or wakeupti.me and set my alarms accordingly. Setting your alarm to align with your sleep patterns makes the act of waking up much easier.
-
I set my phone on my desk away from my bed. The reasoning is two-fold; it forces me to get up and out of bed to dismiss my alarm(This works extra well if you make it a habit to get dressed as soon as you’re out of bed.), and it prevents me from laying in bed while playing on my phone.
-
I wake up at the same time every day. Consistency is paramount managing sleep.
-
I only sleep in my bed. I don’t do anything else. This builds an association to automatically get sleepy when you get in bed because the only thing you in bed is sleep. Your brain knows what to expect and just does it. Sort of like how some guys get excited when they see their girlfriend tie her into a ponytail.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's a technology that was cooler in its older iterations?
67·1 year agoAutomatic watches and grandfather clocks. The way they kept track of time using only mechanical principles is crazy. How does my automatic watch recharge itself using only the movement from wearing it and keep accurate track of time. Grandfather clocks are cool because they’re so power efficient.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•This is a thought experiment "Ball on a Table" for detecting whether someone has Aphantasia. What do you see when you perform this experiment?
2·1 year ago- The ball was red
- It was a man
- They wore a t-shirt and jeans
- A small sized ball, like a stress ball
- It was a plain wooden table made out of cheap particle board or laminated wood.
I had to think of questions to these answers after they were asked. The only things that I already knew were it was a red stress ball and that it was a cheaply made wooden table. I imagined that the ball simply began rolling towards the edge of the table. The person was amorphous at best.
I don’t think I have aphantasia, but I do think I have a weak imagination. When I try to conjure an object or place, it’s always like I’m peering through a keyhole. Like an image with too much vignette. The objects are usually non-descript and are more like concepts than things.

If you discount the clickbait title and thumbnail, it’s a very interesting and entertaining video. I would describe the video as a fictional, historical documentary.
