10·2 days agoI’m retiring soon. That should add enough to cover inflation.

23·2 days ago1 million. Getting 3% back on investments will give me $30,000 a year. That far more than what I currently make. Also, less laundry, less eating out, and not burning so much fuel commuting to work and home.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Broadly speaking, what is your current take on AI?
31·21 days agoWe can’t produce enough power and water to run all the AI data centers so everyone gets their own personal clanker.
I see the day where AI is reserved for more important things like medical research.
Politicians are starting to distance themselves from the AI industry so they can get re-elected. When the AI friendly politicians are voted out we might see some changes.
Afaik, the only companies making a profit are the chip makers.
Investors are not getting their money back. Not one AI company is making more than the spend on AI. Sooner or later, investors will see the industry for what it is, a pyramid scheme.
Companies started re-hiring humans because they are cheaper and do a better job than clankers.
There is a growing public backlash on AI data centers. Once the population puts two and two together they will realize the best way to get rid of AI data centers is to not use AI.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's something you've done that improved your quality of life?
12·21 days agoStrength training, protein, and Creatine (10 grams a day) is a winning combination.
I use them once in a while. Also, I have two in my username.
I noticed you used one in a comment a month ago. Be the change you want to see. 😁

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Please ELI5 the arguments people use to claim it's possible to use AI/LLMs ethically, locally, openly etc.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Please ELI5 the arguments people use to claim it's possible to use AI/LLMs ethically, locally, openly etc.
3·23 days ago“Open weighted” I take to mean that the user can see what sources the LLM/AI was trained upon. Usually this information is a closely guarded corporate secret.
As for “models” this is no different than the different models that a car company offers. Sentra from Nissan, F-150 from Ford, Civic from Honda
If locally run or through a data center, LLM/AIs have two major problems:
- The results can’t really be trusted due to their tendency to hallucinate.
- Frequent LLM/AI usage has been proven to deskill the user as well as a reduction in cognitive ability. I’m dumb enough without getting help from a clanker.
Assuming “run it 100% locally” means on your own hardware with network access, I see no reason this can’t happen given a powerful enough computer.
Proton claims it’s privacy respecting but it’s still developed with stolen data, it’s still bad for mental health, promotes deskilling, and bad for the environment. It’s one of the reasons I downgraded my Unlimited to the free tier.
I bet that guy didn’t lift between 20 and 30.
First you have to be a good con artist with no morals. Are you comfortable ripping of your victim?
