It was this. I was really engaged this season. I was fully on board to support her, but towards the end, I had to remind myself why I was excited. I was already going to support her, and I had forgotten what made me excited more than once.

If that happened to me, a fervent supporter of what she represented, everybody else who was more lukewarm forgot completely. She was the candidate of change at the beginning and was Joe Biden 2.0 by the end.

If Dems don’t figure out how to capture excitement in their next attempts, if they can’t energize the young who are so naive they follow Instagram influencers without a second thought, they’re gonna keep losing to these terrible but charismatic Republicans.

The US elects a misogynistic fascist, and misogynists feel emboldened. Who could have seen this coming? I’m as surprised as y’all are—which is to say: not at all.

You know, I’m okay if an indie dev wants to use an LLM to generate lore text to save time, effort, and/or sanity. I sometimes feel bad skipping that stuff, because I know a small team of people worked really hard to write multiple pages of a “book” in some hard-to-reach corner of their game.

On the other hand, these giant corpos have the resources to pay for writers and artists, and I think they have an ethical duty to society to provide jobs.

I’m not sure how you’d solve the problem of big corpos becoming cheap content farms while avoiding harming the people who use these tools to make something rich and beautiful, but I have to believe there’s a way to thread that needle.

Not in particular, but at least I could ostensibly set up a filter (or automod) that hid or removed low-quality comments like that. Removing downvotes is kinda the same effect.

I’m not saying voting should go away entirely. This instance still has upvotes, after all, but Lemmy will just turn into the cynical, pessimistic, self-fallating shithole that Reddit has become if we don’t do anything differently as a community.

(And yes, it was just an open invitation—a reminder, if you will, that The Fediverse is a cool place where you have choices regarding how you experience it.)

This instance actually drops downvotes before they hit the database, so unless another instance tracks users on different instances, they simply disappear for people on this instance.

Because downvotes are lazy commentary. I’d rather judge for myself what constitutes a bad take and use words to encourage or debate. I don’t need a bunch of angry keyboard warriors poisoning the discourse with voluntary polling.

Plus, seeing a bunch of negative numbers doesn’t make anyone feel good. I would rather Lemmy be a better place than Reddit.

I have. I have it on a laptop and will probably put it on my desktop (waffling between Bazzite and Arch). It’s great, and it’s one of the easiest setups I’ve had to get going with gaming. I recommend joining their Discord, too.

The only thing that is currently a problem, that may be a non-issue when bootc has a full release, is installing certain VPN clients. If it exists as a flatpak, RPM, or in fedora repos, should be fine. If it installs by copying various files around and making system changes on demand at runtime (like Private Internet Access), doesn’t currently work.

Cool. My first thought was how this would differ from blendOS, which is also immutable Arch. Seems like the main difference is the use of systemd-sysupdate to handle unprivileged updates.

The number of Assembly instructions needed to do similar things tends to be less on ARM, from my limited understanding. That leads to efficiencies.

I have generally negative feelings about big companies getting bigger, but from what I understand about the difference between instruction sets, the transition to ARM is a good thing.

Yep, not an unexpected outcome. Enshittification usually has a direct correlation with profitability; most people simply love being the product, because the alternative takes a little effort.

Reddit is still hot garbage, though, and that fact is only growing worse according to my friend group that still goes there on occasion. I much prefer Fedi.

I dunno if I’d even consider them an industry leader, unless you break down their ubiquity by industry category (in which they lead graphic design and maybe video editing, iirc). They lead phone sales in the US by a lot, but their overall desktop share is still relatively small (<10%), and their global footprint is buoyed only by iOS (which is still below Windows and Android).

I would say they’re an innovator, and they push certain companies to innovate, but they don’t really lead by that many metrics.
