  • I tell people I hate being wrong, so the sooner I am corrected or can correct myself the better.

And the answer is… whenever I’m wrong. I am fairly diligent about thinking through what I say and do, but everybody makes mistakes or lacks knowledge, so I am quick to admit being wrong when I am.

Also, counterintuitively, quickly and casually admitting to being wrong often serves to make people forget you were wrong in the first place. My wife and I have had conversations where she admits being wrong (after entirely too much argument), and comments about how I’m never wrong. And I tell her I’m wrong all the time, I just admit it quickly instead of making a big deal about it, so it’s not very memorable. (As we’ve gotten older, those conversations have become more rare, but she still had me 3D print a medal and trophy wall mount, where she gets a “You Were Right” medal or a trophy each time she’s right… like when she convinced me to take my vomiting dog to the vet at night on a weekend and saved his life, and ended up with a dachshund trophy for her wall)

  • I made a compelling argument to a die-hard Republican for UBI, by pointing out enormous job losses on the horizon due to automation. Basically, I said that there will only be so many labor hours available, so either huge numbers of people on unemployment, or less hours worked by each person. So if everyone had a baseline food/shelter/medical, and worked based on anything beyond that they want, there would be enough labor hours available for everyone. And you tax the shit out of automation to pay for it.

Automation should benefit society, not just a handful of people.

  • On an episode of a hospital-based show, a little girl (like, 8 or 10) drowns in a pool and effort to resuscitate fail. That didn’t get me, even with the parents crying. The girl has a sister, who is making a card for the girl who has already been declared dead. Sad, but didn’t get me. Sister explains that the girl died saving her, since she fell in the neighbor’s pool trying to get a ball, and the sister jumped in, pushed the sister out, and then couldn’t get out herself, and eventually drowned.

And I got slammed with a real-life memory. I work in Search and Rescue, and one case my station had over a decade ago was a pair of children that got swept out to sea. Only the younger brother survived. Because the sister spent the whole time keeping him above water, and ended up exhausting and drowning herself. I try not to think about it, because it fucks me up really bad, and especially because now I have a daughter and a younger son. That scene dredged that up real hard, real fast.

  • So this is one of those “even things that end up benefitting men is Feminism” things.

Men having no paternity leave, but women having it, might sound like it’s better for women. But instead it just makes them more likely to leave the workforce when their maternity leave runs out. Giving men an equivalent (minus medical recovery) amount of leave to be used over the first year makes it so both parents can take turns, get the child to a reasonable point of being able to be put in childcare, and allows both to return to work (if desired). And studies have shown the vast, vast majority of the pay difference between men and women is due to separating from the workforce for years after pregnancy (and subsequent pregnancies).

Paternity Leave is part of Feminism.

  • Yeah, but it would be disappointing. Still plenty I’d like to do, and I’m only a handful of years from retirement, so I would be just shy of some well-earned down time.

As far as fear? I’ve never been afraid of dying. The time immediately prior to dying, yes, that is potentially scary. Being dead isn’t something you experience, though, so what is there to fear?

  • Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

But not like you think. I was fairly early in the game, and I was just treasure hunting in the castle to get some good gear before I continued on (good swords and bows that respawn regularly but break over time). Also, if you’ve never played it, the game is not entirely linear, you have four main powers you can gain from fighting and freeing four spirits in different zones, as well as shrines for additional powers and health. But you could spawn at the beginning of the game, do the initial questline to get the paraglider, and then go straight to the castle to fight the BBEG. And you’d die, but you could try!

So I was treasure hunting and I accidentally fell down a hole and ended up fighting the final boss. And then won. And then had to reset to the previous save before falling in. I spent the rest of the game thinking “I don’t actually need this to win, it’s all for overkill.” And it was. So much overkill. It really wasn’t fair at all. The separate storylines were really good and worth doing anyway, though. Beating the game was just kind of a fight tacked on to the end of a fantastic story.
