  • Because the power draw of appliances is measured in watts, so a 60 watt light bulb when lit draws 60 watts of power over the course of one hour. So if I have roughly 100 lightbulbs at 60 watts hooked up to my house, then I’ll be using 6 kW of power each hour.

It tells us more information about the rate of use of that energy. It’s like the difference between a 2 lb sphere of uranium being exploded in a fraction of a second vs 2 lb lf uranium fuel in a reactor operating for however long that much fuel lasts for. Both contain the same amount of joules of energy at the end of the process, one just uses all of those joules in one go and the other slowly releases that energy over a longer period of time.

  • I could imagine a scenario where gal/ft² is useful. Like with grocery store shelving figuring shelving and product stacking. If liquid storage containers are stackable then you have have more gallons per square footage of shelf space. Or of they’re not stackable, then taller containers would hold more liquid in the same shelf space than shorter containers with the same footprint.

Yeah it seems odd to represent something as a volume/area, but that is the relevant information you’re comparing and it’s intuitive how that number changes based on changes to volume as projected onto an area. Bigger number points toward a more efficient use of shelving.

  • My point is that beyond capitalist oligarch pushing the illusion of culture on everyone globally, independent of national origin, most of the cultures within the US have some sort of trace back to European traditions. I’m not exoticising Europe as some “haaaah European traditions are so great and incredible and ancient and mystical” I’m saying that Eurpoean traditions, which have very long histories compared traditions born in the US, heavily influence many of the cultural touchpoints of citizens of the US, especially white citizens. There is no uniquely, independently cultivated non-eurpoean culture held by white people in the US. Ok there’s one uniquely white american culture and we literally fought a civil war over it.

Being “culturally white” in America is pretty synonymous with people trying to make the Confederacy again. Meanwhile the rest of us are over here celebrating the traditions our grandparents or great grandparents brought with them to the US from Europe.

  • Ahh yes I completely forgot that the monarchies of European nations only existed for the last 300 years and are in no way historically backed by a religion that’s existed for almost 2000 years which was has a holy book very significanly based on another religion dating back 5000 years. And I totally forgot that Christmas was a totally unique winter holiday that definitely didn’t borrow any traditions from Yule and the Norse or Saturnalia and the Romans which as we all know is not where Vatican City is located nor did the Roman Empire make Catholicism the official state religion in the 300s AD. And wow I totally forgot the english language was completely perfectly formed as it is today less than 300 years ago and isn’t the result of milennia of linguistic adaption of half a dozen different languages.

And I completely forgot to worship my culturally mandated Trump and Oprah statue this year and instead celebrated the Feast of the Seven Fishes and served a big pasta dinner on Christmas Eve and Day that has historically nothing to do Italy or the Italian migration to the United States. Ahh how could I be so careless and thoughtless and wow my memory is so bad.

Eh people overblow what Jesus did to the moneychangers and merchants in the temple. Yeah he made a whip and used it to drive the animals out, and he flipped over the tables scattering the money everywhere. But he never tried to to hurt people, just get them out of the temple and disrupt all the commerce going on.

Jesus Christ Superstar’s temple scene is probably the most accurate recreation of that passage as written in the Bible. He trashed all the stuff, flipped tables and sent everyone else away. He wouldn’t have beaten people to death, that’s not the message he preached or the actions he took.

  • It’s our national Mythology, we’re a land of migrants and refugees. People have been coming to this land for 500 years, yeah that’s a long time compared to our perspective, but there are traditions and cultures in Europe that predate even knowing about the existence of other land in another hemisphere by an additional 1000 years.

And the culture you describe as dominant over the world while yes is predominantly white, is just unchecked capitalism and neoliberalism and a product of whoever controls the largest military and acts as the economic measuring stick to the rest of the world and that if any other nation were to unseat the US as the dominant economic and militant force, then their oligarch’s culture would dominate the planet.

  • People make this shole “cast iron cult” thing out to be a much bigger thing than it actually is. Cast iron is a durable material and has been used as a tool for cooking in the harshest of conditions for centuries, but to be able to use it in those harsh conditions it needs to be properly taken care of just like any tool.

The reason people seem so neurotic over taking care of cast iron is that cast iron cookware is an investment. Year after year a cast iron pan (and this applies to carbon steel pans too) becomes better and better the more the thin layers of oil polymerization into the seasoning. A fresh off the line Lodge dutch oven doesn’t have the years of layer after layer after layer of polymerized oil on it as the same mode Lodge dutch oven my grandmother used when back she was half my age.

Cast iron is easy to take care of, there’s nothing special about how to take care of it, but the ways to take care of it are specific because of the nature of the metal used. Hell I spend less time cleaning my cast iron pans and carbon steel wok than I do cleaning any other pan type.

  • I fully get that modern dishsoap isn’t caustic enough to truly strip the seasoning, but I have noticed it does very slightly affect the seasoning.

For 99.9% of the time it’s not necessary to use dishsoap and if something is really burnt on, then I’ll tend to go with something a bit more abrasive like a green scrubby pad or maybe steel wool or a paste of baking soda and water.

It’s the same thing I do for my carbon steel wok too, boil water, rinse well, dry with heat and reapply oil to the reheated surface.

  • Teflon itself isn’t poison. The entire point of teflon is that it’s so chemically unreactive that nothing can even bind to it on a molecular level.

The problem with Teflon is that manufacturing it uses a lot of actually toxic chemicals incidental to making the Teflon bind to the metal of a pan and because it’s so non-reactive and very brittle, general use and any disposal of it will result in Teflon molecules just floating around in the environment unable to be broken down by anything.

  • We do wash them, I clean mine by boiling water in them, scraping any stubborn bits with a wooden spatula, rinsing it out under running water and wiping them down with a clean towel and heating the pan again to evaporate any remaining water. No microbials will survive being boiled and then heated again, anything stuck to the pan dissolves away in boiling water and a clean towel will wipe away anything else. After that I add a few drops of oil and wipe down the still hot surface with the thinnest possible coating of oil.

Seasoning for cast iron doesn’t mean holding onto previous flavors. It definitely shouldn’t taste like last night’s dinner. Seasoning in the context of cast iron is the build up of thin layers of polymerized oils from heating them up in a clean pan that forms a durable protective finish that is incredibly non-stick.

So more accurately parallel your underwear example how cast iron is cleaned, if you took your underwear, boiled the hell out of them, used something to give them a scrub, rinsed them out well and then heat dried them.

  • life-altering drugs

    Such as…

HRT is already basically never prescribed to prepubescent and early pubescent children, puberty blockers have been used for cisgendered children entering puberty too early for decades and is perfectly safe for them to take with few to no truly major life altering impacts. Trans minors under 18 already can’t get gender affirming surgery as laid out in the DSM-V.

Be precise and descriptive in your language when arguing, nobody has the time or energy to cover every possibility when you vaguely allude to a number of potential talking points as a bullshit gotcha for the person who actually decided to engage with your bullshit in good faith.
