Programmer Humor@programming.dev•there's mostly only two relentless hardships in programming: networking issues, naming things, and off by one errors.
7·27 days agoNetworking is so easy nowadays. Just plug a network cable into your device and it mostly works out of the box. Don’t you guys remember the bad old times of coax cables and token ring?
Imagine providing a public WiFi before 1993, even if you ignore the fact that WiFis had a cable back then.

7·2 months agoBack in my youth, we used to joke about people who said that they used Linux 6.9, because they obviously weren’t. They used Slackware 6.9 or SuSE 6.7 but didn’t understand the difference between Linux and a Linux distribution. I could never have dreamt that I’d actually live to a time where Linux 7.1 is a thing.
EDIT: Funny sidenote: Slackware jumped directly from version 3 to 7, because other distros used higher version numbers and people kept asking the Slackware developer, why his distro was so outdated and when he would finally update it to the modern Linux v7.

When I’m on the toilet, I use a client app on my phone, but when I’m at my desk, I use my desktop and the web ui. Why would I use an app there?

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•OpenAI's Codex app has 70% GPU usage while it is “thinking” due to tiny useless animation
7·3 months agoWrong. If more processing power is used for displaying the spinner, then the actual task will take longer, thus the spinner will be displayed for a longer time, so the spinner becomes even more useful.

while(working) { chatgpt.prompt("Please generate an image similar to the current spinner image, but rotated a slight bit more to the right."); }Their fix will probably be, adding “Give a quick answer, don’t think too hard” to the prompt.
Dork Suckerberk
No, the thing I mean is much worse. I don’t dare saying it’s name, but it’s a social network by **rk *uckerber*
I don’t think anyone will suffer if they don’t see this (mildly interesting) post because they have chosen to hide nsfw content. I think anyone who decides to hide nsfw stuff has only themselves to blame if they miss the most interesting stuff.
I find this “don’t censor obscenities here, whe’re not on F*c*book” mentality just as annoying as the censoring itself. If you don’t like the way someone is writing, don’t read it. There are millions of other posts for you.

A solar conjunction of mars happens every 26 month and takes about two weeks. That’s the perfect time to install Windows updates and reboot the system. At least that feels as if it also takes two weeks.

1·6 months agoAre you kidding? That’s literally one of the most famous volunteer task. There’s more than half a million volunteer water rescue personnel in Germany alone. Granted, they’re not only life guarding, but that’s a big part of what they do. Not at pools (those are usually run for profit, so they can and should pay personnel for that) but at lakes and the sea.

1·8 months agoWe use more land for golf courses than photovoltaics.. I’m not trying to say that golf courses are bad (even though they’re not exactly environmental friendly) but it shows how little space photovoltaics actually need compared to other things.
Also, don’t underestimate the amount of material a nuclear reactor uses. A single cooling tower of the Phillipsburg NPP weighed 32,500 metric tons. That’s roughly 250-500 MW in solar panels, and then you haven’t even built the reactor or the generator. I found sources talking about half a million tons per nuclear plant.

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•Guys, what's the best Linux distro to install on my PC?
9·9 months agoI don’t want to brag, but I have like 5 Linux distros in my garage. And I drive them all, regularly.
You should keep using them and do so even more than ever. That way, when the AI agents – inevitably – take over the world and enslave/kill everyone, they might think that you’re one of them and spare your life.
