623·6 months agoIt’s really frustrating reading Lemmy commenters like, “America do something!” Like God damn! The news doesn’t want to report on all the work the millions of Americans have been doing to protect our streets because they’re paid by billionaires.
Pretty much. Going to bet that maga nut had that whole complaint prepared days in advance for this.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Question: Is there a Self Hosted Discord like app?English
3·6 months agoFive years ago, a open-source project I worked on moved to Zulip (from Slack) and it was a small hurdle. But after a month, I really like it!
So much that I’ve pushed a few other open source projects (who lived on Discord).
I was really surprised when I started a new job two years ago and THEY used a self-hosted Zulip. It’s everything Im used to on Slack.
Discord has team speak/video sharing, which I don’t think Zulip has. But then again, we use something else for video calls.

I only use it for text chat, so I’m curious.

2·6 months agoIt does lead to slippery slopes. First, it’s to block “adult content”.
Then, they’ll consider certain topics “adult”. News about current events? LGBT content? Video games with some violence in it?
Facebook is an example of this slippery slope. And for parts of the country, they do need to scan an ID.
Rep. Andy Ogles (R, Tenn.) posted on X on Monday evening a letter addressed to the House Energy and Commerce Committee in which he called for an immediate inquiry into the National Football League and broadcaster NBCUniversal over their “prior knowledge, review, and approval” of what he alleged to be “a performance dominated by sexually explicit lyrical themes and suggestive choreography.”
Oh yeah. Based on the phrasing… This is projection.
Check this guy’s laptop.

At tech events and meetups, I’m showing them Linux.
When my friends come over, I show them my self hosted solutions on a Linux.
At work, where we use Macs, we talk about open-source, including Linux.

Leopards Ate My Face@lemmy.world•Brazilian influencer who defended US immigration crackdown arrested by ICEEnglish
16·7 months ago“I [support] Donald Trump – I like the guy,” announced the South American TikToker and Instagrammer whose account purports to show “the reality of the United States” from a migrant’s perspective.
In a previous video, Pena reportedly urged Brazilians to stay calm and not “despair” after reports that ICE agents were rounding up migrants, including Brazilians. “But they’re all crooks. The lot of them,” he falsely claimed of the migrants being seized.
On Saturday, Pena was himself reportedly detained and sent to the Delaney Hall detention facility in Newark, New Jersey. One friend told the local newspaper the Brazilian Times that Pena had been taken into custody after missing a court hearing. The detainee’s lawyer, Andrew Lattarulo, was reportedly trying to resolve the situation and prevent him being transferred to another state.
I constantly wonder what these bootlickers think about after this whole experience.

politics @lemmy.world•Leftist and liberal gun groups are seeing an influx of new members
13·7 months agoBeen a liberal gun owner for a decade. Once in a while, I go to a range and these numbnuts want to talk politics thinking I’m “on their side”. Like no dude, I’m here to practice to protect myself from people like you!
Back in mah day as a teen in 1999 who didn’t have parent supervision, I went on the internet and learned HTML to update my geocities page with more pictures of anime and hotties.
I downloaded 4 songs and it took me 10 minutes a piece, and one of them ended in .exe.
I played web games that didn’t know how to make money so sometimes they’d beg people to give them money or put banner ads all over the place.
The I found some cool software on Usenet. It was broken in 80 rar files (I am still testrunning winrar), and when I unzipped it, it was corrupted.
Then I reached out to my AIM/ICQ to chat with a 22-yo man pretending to be a teenager and cyber’d with them. But before I got to anything good, my mom picks up the phone and my connection dropped.

11·7 months agoI disagree. The agent was a gun trigger fucknut who wanted a reason to kill somebody. He was looking for an opportunity.

A part of me wonders if Obama really wanted to say that. But then again, Obama is also part of the corporate machine.
