Currently this is the case everywhere? With the exception of projects that take email patches, currently all the options are centralised/not federated, and even if e.g. Forgejo finished adding ActivityPub integration you’d still need an account on some Forgejo instance to contribute. Same for email patches; they still require having an email address. If it’s specifically about giving MS your data, sure, although iirc the only data they actually require is an email address. You can use duckduckgo’s duck addresses to get one that’s relatively anonymous (i.e. can be deanonymised by duckduckgo but I doubt anyone’s conspiring that hard to deanonymise a random github user).

That kind of data access is generally included under security not privacy (which is more about telemetry), but obviously with a state threat model privacy and security can become blurred, and that kind of data access is of concern if you are at risk of having devices seized by the state.

Yep, I was referring to that. You can stick someone else’s SIM in your phone and log into their signal account if they’ve not set a Signal PIN. You don’t see message history but new messages to that person will go to you.

I wish Signal stopped using it. I know you can set a Signal PIN but a lot of the non-techy friends I speak to on Signal probably wouldn’t think to, or look through the settings (not that you need to be “techy” to set it, but you know the kind of learned helplessness most people have about tech). At least a prompt for all users to set an account PIN so their account can’t just be stolen by anyone with their SIM card.

Yes, exactly, installing additional add-ons for Mullvad browser (except noscript) defeats the purpose. I also find it annoying whenever I have to use Tor Browser or Mullvad Browser because I have to use the mouse.

I use Librewolf for my “normal”/fingerprintable/non-anonymous browsing, but I still try to reduce fingerprintability (don’t have too many add-ons installed, RFP is on ofc, I have letterboxing etc).

To be fair, if you want to reduce fingerprintability but still browse the web with just your keyboard, the TUI web browsers could work. Obviously they’re pretty uncommon, but I imagine you’d look like any other user of lynx/w3m/etc. So you’d be quite unique but I’m not sure if you’d be distinguishable from other users of the same browser.

It’s really easy to go mouseless on Linux/Unix. Just use as many TUI programs as possible since none of them will be mouse-oriented.

A lot of people (myself included) like vim keybindings and want them in other programs, and of course using vim keybindings is inherently mouseless.

Off the top of my head, some software I use:

• river as my wayland compositor
• lf for a file browser
• imv for an image viewer
• Librewolf with Vimium-C to browse the web
• mpd + ncmpcpp for listening to music (you can also use cmus if you don’t want to use mpd)

I don’t use them, but you can also use something like Mutt, Neomutt, or Aerc for an email client, and use CLI bittorrent clients and password managers.

I know it’s officially for-hey-oe, but I always say forge + joe cause I find it easier. I used to say “forjo” (like “forge” ending in an “o”, or “for joe” sped up) as well.

I use Fractal. It’s a GNOME app so GTK and native, No idea if it’s cross-platform. I went with it cause I was also looking for something that wasn’t Electron and also wasn’t TUI (since I want to be able to view images normally) and it seemed like the most suitable, fully-featured option.

Sure, but tracking period data can be very helpful for people. For a threat model of abortion criminalisation (or maybe trans healthcare criminalisation with treatments stopping periods, or really any kind of restrictions on medical autonomy), encryption at rest of locally stored period data is perfectly sufficient. They are not going to send military intelligence agencies after a random person having an abortion. It is actually a relatively low threat model, like equivalent to buying drugs online or something like that.

I wonder how many average users would be bothered to export their period database and transfer to a new phone every time they get a new phone. I do that when I get a new phone (not often, I use my phones till they break/are literally unusable and unfixable), but I’ve had real trouble getting other people to do these kinds of things.
