Not all advertising is made equal, but I do acknowledge that being in the UK, my relationship to it is probably different to someone in the US.

I mean, I’m not inherently against the idea of a company telling people that they offer a product or service. As people who buy things, it’s useful to us to be aware that such things exist, and while that’s the case, I have no issues with companies being inventive.

But what’s shitty is that the biggest, crappiest corporations naturally have the biggest budget to blanket their shitty ads all over the place.

There’s an independent burger joint in my town that’s pretty well regarded by local residents. It’s on the end of a row, and on its side wall is an advertising board over which they have no control. For years, that board was essentially permanently rented to McDonalds, whose nearest ‘restaurant’ to that board was several miles away. That kind of thing can and should fuck off. It’s just nasty bullying.

Advertising can be useful and relatively unobtrusive. I don’t use TikTok because I can’t be trusted with it, but my wife does, and they’ll AirPlay it to our TV to show me ones they’ve favourited. Every now and then I’ll see one that’s pretty much an advert for a product, but presented in a way that it’s actually interesting, useful information about a thing for which I could well be in the market. And to me, that’s fine.

I’ve hit an age where I’ve gone from Dark Mode Is Life to switching between them depending on lighting levels and display quality. There are times when dark mode is almost painful.

The low effort, saturation advertising we get, yes. Advertising can be interesting or inventive, but not the way it’s done now.

Being unaware of pinchflat, I kinda ended up making my own.

Started off with a little app, the entirety of which was a button that, when pressed, took the link om my clipboard and downloaded the video into my Jellyfin folder. Then I got tired of having to keep it all updated across several different computers I use, so I turned it into something that runs in a docker container on my home server, that I can access through anything in my tailnet. Works beautifully.

Bilresa buttons from IKEA are a blessing. Cheap, (currently) work with ZigBee and ridiculously simple to set up. I can talk to Home Assistant, but never do.

I’ve got Nebula. Took 'em up on a deal on an annual sub when Tom Scott started his new series on there.

It’s nice to watch channels like Mr Mobile without adverts, but channels like Not Just Bikes and Mustard already run on YT without ads. Sure, there’s an ad for Nebula at the end their episodes, but it’s right at the end, so is easily skipped.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s loads of stuff on there, but discovery isn’t particularly easy, and most of it is USA-centric, which doesn’t really interest me.

I was talking about the Windows UI on Mastodon the other day, particularly in reference to how I have it set to dark mode on my PC at work, but when I hit Send/Receive in Outlook I get a bright white, XP-ass-looking box pop up. Someone replied, “the older the settings boxes look, the more useful they are”. And I can’t disagree.

I tend to have safe search off, because I’m a grown up. But it can be kind of annoying to search for a completely innocuous term, only for the image results to somehow be rammed full of people getting rammed full.
