I think we’re already seeing that they’re quite capable of doing severe damage to the USA and other countries. You don’t have to be smart or skillful to be a wrecking ball. And, as another commenter says, the pandemics, wars and climate disasters they will bring have yet to really kick in.

It sounds like there may be a plan to block known bots once they have used this tool to identify them. Over time this would reduce the amount of AI slop they need to generate for the AI trap, since bots already fingerprinted would not be served it. Since AI generators are expensive to run, it would be in Cloudflare’s interests to do this. So while your concern is well placed, in this particular case there may be a surge of energy and water usage at first that tails off once more bots are fingerprinted.
Some of these LLMs introduce very subtle statistical patterns into their output so it can be recognized as such. So it is possible in principle (not sure how computationally feasible when crawling) to avoid ingesting whatever has these patterns. But there will also be plenty of AI content that is not deliberately marked in this way, which would be harder to filter out.

Yes, so often we see people online saying “Ha ha, let the morons get COVID/measles/bird flu/etc!” They don’t stop to think about the risk to everyone else, particularly vulnerable people some of whom can’t get vaccinated and rely on herd immunity. In all these years still that lesson doesn’t seem to have been learned. I suspect the people saying this are healthy young people who haven’t really considered how different from theirs some people’s lives are.

I never really liked that kind of use of variable shadowing. It seems like swapping one set of potential risks, that are easily spotted when debugging, for another more subtle kind of risk that’s harder to notice.

There was a report yesterday that Canadian tourism to the USA is down 85% as a result of Trump. His government is really ramping up American unemployment, just to make the coming recession/depression extra miserable. Oh well, maybe they plan to cheer everyone up with a good old patriotic war against Canada.
Trying to make it sound like a technical failure, not a massive show of incompetence and a huge security lapse by people who are unqualified for their jobs and shouldn’t have been communicating through those channels in the first place.
And “It’s the first time we’ve really fucked up inexcusably in a whole two months” doesn’t really work as a defense. Nor is it true.
