A bit off topic but I find it more and more difficult figuring out if I will like a movie basted on reviews alone, as when I’ll check the metrics it will be a thousand 1s and four hundred 10s.

massive_bereavement@fedia.iotoHacker News•Vitamin D and Omega-3 have a larger effect on depression than antidepressants
142·10 days agoI’m going to play a bit of an uncle here:
- Vitamin D is mostly made by our skin in contact with sunlight (there are also food sources).
- If you are depressed by another cause than vitamin D deficit, you might prefer being inside, and therefore you lack that sweet sunlight, and now you’ve got vitamin D deficit. (With often funky diets or complete absence of them)
- Depression is a symptom, and sometimes is cyclical as it is affected by a hundred things, including biochemistry (hello Vitamin D).
Personal, uneducated note: When I struggle with depression, if I can get 1% better, I could get better enough to get help, I would try it. Just remember that if you have depression, seek professional help, as they might help you find the root cause (or get near it), rather than just buying supplements, attempting to treat the symptoms.

Ceres is super cool though I will always have a spot for Pluto.
Makemake is rad though, so fast it warped.
Thank god he didn’t eat her.
I went into a nat science major because animals are cool, and end up being a bunch of statistics and unfun math. I want my money back.

Technology@lemmy.world•Microsoft Windows 365 goes down the day after Microsoft celebrates 'reimagining the PC as a cloud service that streams a Cloud PC'
51·15 days agoMuch more like a stream of shit.
I feel it is well explained here: https://all3dp.com/2/kinect-3d-scanner-easy-beginner-tutorial/
I’m sure at the 3d printing community they can provide a better guide though.
But the guist of it is having a 3d scanner allows you to scan an object that then later you can print (with some editing). This is fantastic for making that broken plastic piece of a machine that otherwise would be working.

Linux@programming.dev•The Windows Interface You Didn’t Like, For Linux
4·19 days agoMost opinionated people hated the Appearance Manager in MacOS, but for me it was a huge highlight of running that OS, with a dear preference towards “Drawing Board”.
There’s a mockup that mocks me as I do really wish this could be done: https://www.pling.com/p/1219916
And then Apple decided to close down any tweaking and convert it into a single look because the great leader wanted uniformity and some brand bs: https://www.wired.com/2002/10/the-mac-os-that-cant-be-tweaked/ - paywall

Linux@programming.dev•The Windows Interface You Didn’t Like, For Linux
5·19 days agoYou will have to submit to XFCE, I have it as a spare when I feel nostalgic from my daily DE (KVM).
- XFWM4 (has both 1.3 and 3.0)
- GTK2 which sadly is just GTK2.
- Either This or This
- Mice:
- Fonts or Topaz Nerd font
- Wallpapers (Though I don’t use them)
- SDDM (There are several available)
Icons are… hard to accomplish:
There are a couple of png libraries out there, so it is possible to recreate either the 3.5 or posterior looks, however the older workbench with its lovely drawers and different sized icons is something I haven’t achieved.
You can still pick a modern DE, add png icons to the desktop and recreate something like this without the filesystem navigation (or prefs):

(I found interesting the lower bar with the nextstep-like icons, though this was on 1994 so…)

Linux@programming.dev•The Windows Interface You Didn’t Like, For Linux
37·19 days agoThat’s one of the aspects I like from Linux: The ability to make the desktop your own. And, like you, I’ll defend that preference and choice regardless of how terrible it is ;)
Sometimes for no apparent reason I will reconfigure my desktop to look like an old OS (Workbench, MacOS, OS/2, etc…)
Actually it is fantastic for 3D scanning: cheap and does the trick. If you want to gift me one, feel free.

Exactly. How are we supposed to track him?
