Man, do I not miss reddit one single fucking bit. I have never once looked back since leaving in the first wave of APImageddon or whatever we’re calling that. Every post I see or article I read just validates that decision.

reddit has always been risky in one way or another. When I first joined in 2013, it was 4chan-risky Now it’s Facebook-risky, which is honestly much more ultimately harmful and nefarious than 4chan-risky, even if 4chan and facebook of today share a lot of the same trolls.

Billionaires want to herd us and all of our communications into these controlled networks for a number of nefarious reasons, but the reason that matters most to you and I right now is that they know that people need to communicate in order to coordinate, in order to stand up to oligarchy. Facebook isn’t going to let people coordinate a general strike on its platform, and neither is reddit, or youtube, or any of these totally captured networks.

We need to own our comms, which means that the fediverse itself isn’t sufficient either.

It’s crazy how much memes have become like comic strips when you stop and think about it.

Which is why bidet is the only civilized solution.

Years ago, when this policy was first being contemplated, someone at google plugged a number, likely larger than this, into a spreadsheet analyzing the cost/benefit of spying on their customers.

This is just post-activation operating expense from their perspective.

Pseudo-intelligence

I’ve never even met anyone with my first name alone. I’m essentially positive I am 1 of 1 when it comes to my first and last name together.

It’s the entropy of the internet. It always increases.

Dropout and Nebula are making some insanely high quality content, and those are just the two obvious examples that came to my mind. Both also exhibit a more progressive business model and are less capitalistic in their thinking.

I’m sure there are plenty of similar examples.

It’s worth noting that this is the second time in a few days where I’ve read something and said to myself “that is damn fine community moderation”, lo and behold both cases involved you, @TheTechnician27@lemmy.world. Keep up the great work, accept help from kindred spirits, and don’t let yourself burn out along the way.

Don’t worry, they were left totally unsatisfied.

My only quibble would be to swap “pay” for “invest” which captures both the dynamic of up front expense and expected savings from ending recurring subscription fees. That’s how I look at it. Every penny I put into my own digital sovereignty is an investment that will yield returns both financial and otherwise.

Editorializing titles with unsupported claims is a very right wing move.
