  • I’m not sure of the kindest way to put this. Anyone can do what Aaron did. Each moment is a choice. Externalizing that kind of heroism is disempowering. The main thing stopping people is a brutally enforced lack of hope. That is exactly what eventually stopped him. His legacy has been built on, the work is nowhere near complete, and there is so much room for each and every one of us to continue making impactful contributions. He made reddit, we’re on lemmy, who knows what’s next? It’s only with time that these actions seem larger than life. In the moment, to follow your morality is all that’s necessary to keep moving towards a better world.

  • We’re all good at different things, friend. I feel rich in spirit, and in my many years have noticed life getting harder for the people I care about as number goes up. Matter, energy, “wealth” can’t be created or destroyed, only transferred, and what that line seems to correlate with most is how much has been taken from the world we share and locked away in a form that can be measured and controlled.

I want to be more connected to that world, to know and feel ever more, not merely be compensated for my cooperation by power within a process consuming what I am already part of. Contentment comes from place and purpose, and number will never provide that. Do the billionaires seem happy to you? Is their lifestyle an aspiration? Investment gives to them of your self and ties your fortune to theirs

  • I wouldn’t worry too much about sportfishing man. It’s essentially impossible for us to cause a problem with rods and reels, even long line for the subsistence folks is essentially negligible compare to factory bottom trawlers. Just the bycatch from one set on those things has a bigger impact than a thousand sportfishers hitting their limits all season. Really all the points people have made ITT about hunting vs factory farming apply here pretty well too
