Same here! I spent a lot of time in Midgar, so it felt like the whole game could take place there. But stepping onto the world map was an amazing experience partially because of how amazing Midgar was to me.

I played it as a kid in the 90s though, so that might’ve coloured my interpretation of it.

I think you’re missing the key part of the problem. It isn’t the AI that’s the issue.

The problem is that he was being paid for how many listeners his AI songs got. But he used bots to “listen” to the songs. Nobody actually listened to his AI music.

The flaw in the system was that they couldn’t detect his bots. (And the bots are not AI)

But to your second point, as others have mentioned, body image issues are likely the biggest reason for the change discussed in the OP.

Weightlifting at certain young ages can be harmful. I’m not sure if that’s part of the motivation as I’m not certain what the ages are, but that’s something else to consider.

The point of assignments is to help study for your test.

To me, “assignment” is more of a project. Not rote practice. Applying knowledge to a bit of a longer term, multi-part project.

I remember teachers telling us not to trust the calculators. What if we hit the wrong key? Lol

It seems like the AI tool would be helpful for things like assignments rather than tests. I think it’s intellectually dishonest to ignore the gains in some environments because it doesn’t have gains in others.

You’re also comparing a young technology to methods that have been adapted over hundreds of thousands of years. Was the first automobile entirely superior to every horse?

I get that some people just hate AI because it’s AI. For the people interested in nuance, I think this study is interesting. I think other studies will seek to build on it.

I believe technically-inclined people could monitor the traffic that exits the phone, or at least passes through the router.

Audio recordings would be larger than the kinds of stuff that’s just sent passively.

There’s a simpler explanation – you’re in the same geospatial region or you’re connected to the same networks as the people you’re having conversations with, and those people also looked up the things they have conversations about.

If you have GPS, Wi-Fi, or (possibly) Bluetooth, then that’s how they can pretty easily associate you to those people.

When you grow up around something being easy to use, you lose the intricate understanding that used to be necessary.

For Gen X and Millennials, it’s probably cars and/or electronics.

Busted light switch cover? Better call an electrician “just in case”.

Need to replace an air filter? Better take it to the shop.

Not sure where the line is, but I had a Gen X woman tell me that she needs to take the car to the dealership to get her air pressure adjusted. When I showed her how to take off the cap on the tire’s air pressure valve, she looked at me as if I had just pried off her steering wheel, lol

Not sure where the line is drawn, and there are definitely some people in those generations who know those things. But I’d bet Boomers and earlier generations had a better understanding on average.
