We are always under more threat from our own governments than a foreign one and I do not live in China or China-aligned country. I’m safer with my data in Beijing than in Redmond.

I think the the fairer argument is that being open source doesn’t get people to use it, and, since people want to be where everyone else is, they’ll go to apps with marketing budgets and no requirement to learn how to federate your instance or whatever the fuck.

The reason sports and ESPN are so valuable is because demand to watch a game expires immediately when the game ends. That means ESPN can charge what it wants because it controls the feed.

Imagine a world where people were just as happy to watch an old sportsball game as they are to watch an old episode of Mad Men. ESPN would be nothing.

ESPN is (was?) a big chunk of what you pay for cable TV, too, and I don´t think you can a la carte it out. (And yes, simple solution: stop paying for cable TV.)

It’s like a lot of things. There is a point where quality is no longer distractingly bad for most people, and you can spend more for higher quality and you appreciate it for a little while then forget about it until you go back to the lower quality. But if you spend enough time with the low quality stuff, it bothers you less.
