I saw a billboard a year or two ago when they banned cigarette ads, or tried to at this point. The billboard said something like: if cigarette ads get banned, saussages could be next, be careful what you vote for.

It blew my mind because all i could think off was: good, thank you. Ban them all. What kind of person goes NoooOoOoo not my ads.

I would like ads in the context of places where I’m looking for a good or service, or where volunteering such information would be potentially beneficial to me. Things like voluntarily signing up for specific advertising emails or related products on a store page. Ads should serve people, not manipulate them and clutter up the town.

Also as long as we’re still doing capitalism, I really like being able to get things for free in exchange for viewing ads. It makes things much more available to us poors.

I always had this idea since I was a kid, that there would be a single central register of all goods and services in existence and who offers them near you and at what price. Basically the truly transparent market economists always pretend exists. That would be the proper, and only, place to advertise.

Lots of black market off the books advertising that tries to stay under the radar, think product placements where they don’t disclose that they were paid for it

I had an idea about getting rid of decorative packaging and logos. You’d have the name and information of the product in a selection of pre-approved fonts, colors, and layouts. No misleading photographs or cute characters or your founder’s heartwarming life story.

How does any small business or sole trader ever get anywhere without marketing their wares or service? I appreciate the thought but it’s foolish to say abolish it.

I cannot tell you how many times I purchased, or bought services by word of mouth of friend or family than a internet/tv/roadside advertisement. Were so inundated by ads, if I see an ad on TV or the internet at this point, and I know I’m not alone. Most of us assume whatever is being sold is shit/ a lie.

Absolutely. I kinda feel if they’re spending money on advertising, that’s money they’re not spending on the product/customer. If I see a product that’s being marketed everywhere, the customer is paying for that.

Actually I think the idea here is banning paid advertisement, especially online paid ads. In some ways that would give local traders a significant advantage.

Our world is so centralized around economic activity and our political systems are heavily catered to ensuring it continues that I don’t think it would ever be legislated away. Too many people make too much money and have too much influence to even consider it.

Radical idea, I think a toned down version of it could be incredibly healthy. For example no advertisements on roadways, no advertisements on video platforms, etc

I fully agree that paid corporate advertising should be toned down, and that advertising has been given too much public space to put whatever it’s message out. But the question was about banning ALL advertising.

How is harrassing me with psychological tricks to make money more important than my well being?

Can I come inside your house and shout “hey your wife is washing her ass, maybe she should get a different brand of soap!!”

I’m not defending advertising, but the business doesn’t care about your wellbeing, they care about your money. The bigger the business the less they care.

      As The Fucking Article says:

humanity had been free of current forms of advertising for 99.9% of its existence. Word-of-mouth and community networks worked just fine. First-party websites and online communities would now improve on that
