I’m willing to accept some things may warrant software patents, but for real, so many are garbage. The one with Nintendo and Pal world where they patented “throwing capturing devices at monsters in a 3d environment” is so stupid.

Fuck cloudflare but kudos to them.

The agreement means that Sable will tell the US Patent and Trademark Office that it is abandoning its patent rights and no further claims based on those patents will be possible.

    Gold.

The existence of two earlier US patents, 6,584,071 and 6,680,933 for router technology developed by Nortel Networks and Lucent in the 1990s convinced the jury that Sable’s '919 patent should never have been granted.

It’d be hilariously awesome if Nortel and Lucent took wind of this and decided to bleed Sable dry in court

“In the end, Sable agreed to pay Cloudflare $225,000, grant Cloudflare a royalty-free license to its entire patent portfolio, and to dedicate its patents to the public, ensuring that Sable can never again assert them against another company,” said Terrell and Nemeroff.

Sounds like Sable has already been destroyed so thoroughly there wouldn’t be anything left to sue.

        Yeah except:

Five other companies that we know of sued by Sable – Cisco, Fortinet, Check Point, SonicWall, and Juniper Networks – settled out of court.

Then they are forced to pay out $225k and are “destroyed?” I don’t think so. Sounds to me like the fucks behind this are taking their money and running, lest somebody sue the dogshit out of them like they deserve.

They still exist as a corporate entity and I wouldn’t consider it cruel or malevolent to wholly eradicate them through patent troll litigation. It’d be rich. They’re still sitting on dubiously-gotten gains and it doesn’t sit right with me that stakeholders will be able to clean out all the pocket change under the couch cushions and walk away

“Sable is a patent troll. It doesn’t make, develop, innovate, or sell anything. Sable IP is merely a shell entity formed to monetize (make money from) an ancient patent portfolio acquired by Sable Networks from Caspian Networks in 2006.”

Damn… What an unbelievable douche business model.
