Framing autism in general as a “price” that has to be paid is demeaning and IMO a bad take anyway. It’s par for the course with neurotypical folk only seeing autism as a net negative and not thinking about all the great human advancements that I would bet are the result of an autistic person’s hyperfixation. Particularly STEM advancements.
Severe cases are usually debilitating, yes. But ASD1 is a lot more common than people realize, it’s still very underdiagnosed. I firmly believe I’m better off with it.
Most of the challenges of being autistic come from neurotypical people and their expectations. When im around other ND people i dont ‘struggle’ at all, the struggle is existing in a society that tells me im existing ‘wrong’ when to me its clear as day that my way is better but noone wants to listen to why.

In my experience, this extends beyond just communication. Every social aspect is easier with other autistic folks and more difficult with allistic folks. Yet we’re constantly told we have poor social skills by allistic people, who don’t recognize that they are equally part of the social difficulty equation.
You don’t think autistic people and their relatives are paying the toll for the condition?
I mean they would have it easier without it. Why is that offensive?

The existence of autism isn’t the problem. The “toll” we pay is other folks treating us like problems to be solved rather than as people.
