Not that it’s an excuse for anything. This also smells of religion. And people kill in the name of religion all the time.
You say that like you think religious belief isn’t a form of mental illness.
I don’t believe it is. I think that’s rather reductive considering how much it’s impacted human culture over history.

Fanatical religious belief is virtually indistinguishable from mental illness to my eyes.
