I’ve been complemented before in passing by someone and not felt the overwhelming urge to immediately engage in a relationship with them. Surely, context and place matters, and it can get confusing sometimes… But I think a “sorry, I was just appreciating ____” occasionally might be worth the net gain.

… And you can phrase something in a way that isn’t misinterpreted. Its situational. I’ve certainly told women a color suits them or complemented a look, hairstyle, what have you… Making certain to filter it in a way that is as complimentary as it can be without toeing that line. Its not that hard and frankly it’s worth seeing someone light up a bit when they get some positive reinforcement.
