Perhaps its better to view them more from a position of an observer than a participant when it comes to the meta, tiktok, twitter type social media run by big centralized money or governments backing them.
I get what you mean, but the fediverse will likely never overcome state powers and reach. They have so much money, talent, and infrastructure to push propaganda.

Some people provide translated subtitles and the app does have a built in translator function. I found it’s enough to converse, but definitely niche.

Most platforms have some kind of moderation. But I’m sure a Chinese platform will be quite selective about a particular set of topics and themes.
