I’ve switched to Ecosia from Kagi because they started spending my money on AI instead of making the search engine better, and I stumbled upon an option to something like “Chat with Ecosia AI. You can try asking it how to be energy neutral. Note that by interacting with this chat you agree to the ChatGPT privacy policy”
It’s baffling how out of touch that sentence is, lol. “Energy neutral” and “ChatGPT” in one sentence is so bizzare.
Well, at least it is nice that it’s not forced onto the user. When turned off, anything AI-related also seems to be hidden from the UI which I like. The settings are stored in the local storage so it shouldn’t get reset too often (when not using an account).
You can tell most people don’t read the article before they vote. Ddg just added a way to turn on or off ai results by default.
Reading takes time. I wanna doomscroll /s.
What article? This just links to the separate search engine experience.
I think they mean, the ycombinator post. It’s linked in the post here on lemmy:

I think basically what’s happened is that someone stumbled into the DDG url with AI turned off (https://noai.duckduckgo.com/), seen the thing that says “we’ve turned off AI answers” and misunderstood whats happened.
I guess I need to wait for Brave to add this subdomain as a search option.
Edit for the down voters: seriously. On the mobile app you can only select from what’s listed. There is no way to just edit and save.
I gotchu. How do I set my default search engine?
You tried but that doesn’t work. That’s for the desktop version. Mobile does not let you do anything other than pick from a list. No way to manually edit and save the default.
Curses! Do your settings save if you disable them here?

That changes it for when you search on the home page. Not the address bar.
